Certified Hazardous Energy Control Program (Lockout / Tagout) Course

This course is based on the requirements of OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.147.

Hazardous Energy Control (Lockout/Tagout) protects employees who could be injured as a result of the unexpected release of hazardous energy.

These requirements apply when one or more employees perform servicing or maintenance on machinery or equipment that could cause injury due to unexpected start-up or the release of hazardous energy.

Lockout (LO) and Tagout (TO) are the primary methods for controlling hazardous energy. They are commonly applied during installation, construction, repair, adjustment, inspection, maintenance, testing, and dismantling of equipment or processes.

The objectives of this course are for participants to be able to:

• Describe the purpose and components of a Hazardous Energy Control Program
• Define “Lockout/Tagout” and when it is required in the workplace
• List the types of energy that may require Lockout/Tagout
• Describe training requirements for authorized, affected, and other employees
• Describe requirements for periodic inspection and evaluation
• Identify and provide examples of Lockout/Tagout devices and materials
• List and describe the basic steps in the Lockout/Tagout process
• Describe the procedure for releasing Lockout/Tagout
• Describe group Lockout/Tagout procedures and requirements during shift changes

Lockout/Tagout will likely be necessary in your workplace because nearly all work environments include sources of hazardous energy that could injure or kill workers.
